ESSAY REMINDERS

  1. Unpack the essay question - what is it actually asking you?

  2. Don't be afraid to take an interesting stance on the topic.

  3. Plan your structure.

  4. Clear and concise ideas outline in introduction (remember Miss Moleta's guide to intros).

  5. Conclusion should re-state ideas but in a different way. Try and finish with a strong sentence.

  6. PEEL

  7. At least one direct quotation per point. Try to refer to particular parts in the text throughout paragraph also.

  8. Inverted commas or italics for text titles.

  9. In text referecning (Louis Nowra, Cosi, act 3, scene 1, line 64.).

  10. Demonstrate your understanding of the text, as well as the characters and themes explored.

  11. Develop a stance on the essay questions and clear points to support this.

  12. Discuss aspects that show the depth of your understanding. For eg. demonstrating an understanding of the significance of the parallel between Cosi and Cossi Fan Tutte is more substantial than a quotation about what a character wore (unless that was symbolic and you could discuss that).

  13. Make a plan before you write and decide on quotations.

  14. Flag quotes you think are significant prior to in-class.

  15. Do the practice in-class question and peer-review.
