ESSAY REMINDERS
-
Unpack the essay question - what is it actually asking you?
-
Don't be afraid to take an interesting stance on the topic.
-
Plan your structure.
-
Clear and concise ideas outline in introduction (remember Miss Moleta's guide to intros).
-
Conclusion should re-state ideas but in a different way. Try and finish with a strong sentence.
-
PEEL
-
At least one direct quotation per point. Try to refer to particular parts in the text throughout paragraph also.
-
Inverted commas or italics for text titles.
-
In text referecning (Louis Nowra, Cosi, act 3, scene 1, line 64.).
-
Demonstrate your understanding of the text, as well as the characters and themes explored.
-
Develop a stance on the essay questions and clear points to support this.
-
Discuss aspects that show the depth of your understanding. For eg. demonstrating an understanding of the significance of the parallel between Cosi and Cossi Fan Tutte is more substantial than a quotation about what a character wore (unless that was symbolic and you could discuss that).
-
Make a plan before you write and decide on quotations.
-
Flag quotes you think are significant prior to in-class.
-
Do the practice in-class question and peer-review.
PRACTICE IN-CLASS QUESTION
